Boating at Bay Boat Club
Every week week launch paddle craft and sailboats. If the winds are out of the south we can launch our Boston Whaler for tubing and water skiing. For additional information contact: skipper@seascoutship41.org
Sea Scouts and Explorer Clubs get set for the 2018 boating season.
Summer is on its way and with it comes many fun activities and boating on Lake Erie. We are meeting now down at Bay Boat Club on Tuesday evenings to prepare for on the water activities.
Peter won our first annual fishing tournament with his 16″ walleye fishing off our 44′ Navy Yawl.
Explorer Club Team Eco 2nd in State!
Congratulations to Team Eco on coming in 2nd in State in the U.S. Army eCyber Mission competition. Their project involved exploring the macroinvertebrate of Porter Creek. Details of their project will be found in the published article in the Westlake/Bay village Observer.

Porter Creek Watershed to be Subject of Study by Sea Scouts and Explorer Club.
The Group (as we are now known) made up of high school youth in Sea Scout Ship Intrepid (41), 6th-8th graders in Marine Explorer Club 360 and the newly formed Explorer Club 180 composed of 3rd-5th graders.
This winter of 2017/18 we are investigating the Porter Creek watershed. It is a small creek passing through Bay Village as it heads to Lake Erie. Recent studies by a number of government agencies have determined it is responsible for closing the swimming beach at Metroparks, Huntington Beach. The Battle of Lake Erie 2017
To commemorate the 204th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie we had Sea Scout Ship 41 take on the Explorer Club 360. the battle was followed by a fun family picnic at Lorain Sailing & Yacht Club.
Surprise visit from the Bay Village Police.
On our regular sailing and boating night at Bay Boat Club we were surprised by a visit from the local police. Sgt. Gillespie was king enough to visit with us and share his thoughts on boating safety. We are blessed by have a sail building that houses paddle boards, Laser sailboats and a jon boat. We also have access to the kayak racks where we store three kayaks.
Sea Scouts win eCyberMission State Championship.
The U.S. Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) has announced 9th graders, Khaled Hamil, Leo Cavalier and Nick LaRossa, Alpha Team, as 1ST place Ohio State winners and regional finalists in the 15th annual eCYBERMISSION competition – a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)initiative sponsored by the U.S. Army Educational Outreach Program. eCYBERMISSION, administered by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), promotes self-discovery and enables students to recognize the real-life applications of STEM

.Last winter Alpha Team worked to evaluate the environmental status of Creek Cahoon. The team looked at the nitrogen and phosphorus chemicals in the creek soil and water, and determined the canopy cover along its length. Further details can be found in the Westlake/Bay Village Observer.
Quartermaster Award for Nate Cullinan

Congratulations to 2015 Bay High graduate, Nathan Cullinan, on receiving the Quartermaster Award, the highest rank in Sea Scouts. The award was presented to Nate after he sat through a Board of Review composed of four scout leaders with over a hundred years’ experience. Nate was quizzed on his leadership skills and the lessons learned during his tenure in Sea Scouts. The board was particularly challenging as it was chaired by Mark Bobal, a retired U.S. Coast Guard Commander.
Mr. Bobal, who presently serves as the Passenger Vessel Safety Specialist for the 9th Coast Guard District stated that, “Nate was ready for all the questions we could send his way.” The nautical questions which Mr. Bobal asked stemmed from his service on board the Arctic Icebreaker, CGC Westwind and over 30 years in the Marine Safety Inspection field.
Nate has been involved in the Bay Seat Scouts for five years. In that time he has tackled many projects including leading a group of youth in building underwater remote operated vessels (ROVs) for competitions sponsored by the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center. He also oversaw the completion of the Rolling Tide, a floating 8-foot hamster wheel, made from recycled Tide bottles. The Sea Scouts entered the Rolling Tide in the Great Lake Erie Boat Float at Edgewater Park.
Last year Nate competed in the International Koch Cup Regatta in Long Beach, California, sailing with over 80 Sea Scouts from countries ranging from Australia to Poland. Nate came in second in the Kiwi Division. Before Nate heads off to college at the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) in Bristol, Rhode Island, he will sail on the tall ship, S/V Dennis Sullivan, as a chaperon for other students. This tall ship program is sponsored by the Cleveland Rotary project YESS program.
Nate’s leadership and mechanical skills repairing engines and rigging on the Sea Scout boats will be sorely missed as he heads off to IYRS; but we wish him well as he continues his studies in Composite Technology and Marine Systems.
